Orianne Simon

    Author

My name is Orianne Simon. I am studying to be an elementary teacher. I am from the Buffalo
    area.
I chose Rwanda because I felt that this was my calling to go. I know this feeling because it’s the
same feeling when I realized I wanted to be a teacher. I have been so indecisive in my life that
when I finally started to get a sense of what I am supposed to do and be in life I never wanted to
lose that feeling again. I want to be an educator who can be empathetic, can conflict manage,
be a community builder, and more. All of this is offered through the The Anne Frank Project.
Throughout my journey working with Professor Kahn, Jonise and the rest of my fellow peers I
have grown to a better understanding as to why this trip is so important and why I need to go.
To not only become a better teacher but to better myself as a person.

I am looking forward to traveling to Rwanda and seeing the power of forgiveness and love.
Everyone’s story matters is what I am learning so far and that I matter. I am looking to learn
from the families and children in Rwanda to learn their story.
I am also wanting to gain a new sense of style when it comes to teaching. I think story based
learning should be incorporated into all classrooms. To uplift the energy in classrooms and to
have the students learn more about themselves and classmates.
